I have to admit, the red and pink tinged rose petals appealed to me and after quickly scanning the cover summary ooh a historic novel, a ROMANTIC historic novel.....with secrets and mystery!.... I was sold!
Quick little summary: This novel follows the story of the Toliver, Warwick, and DuMont families, spanning three generations in a quaint Texan town. The families histories are intertwined and by way of a few unfortunate, misunderstandings their lives change forever. The majority of the story is told through flash back, imbedded secrets and long forgotten improprieties start unravelling at the death of the cotton plantation matriarch, Mary Toliver. It's a story about deciding what is most important in your life and then living with the rewards and consequences of that decision. The theme of roses is found throughout the novel, Red for asking for forgiveness, while a White rose grants forgiveness.
Leila Meacham writes a compelling saga that pulls the reader in and the plot is gripping which keeps the reader spellbound. The different character perspectives (which are divided into parts) are interwoven seamlessly. It's a little on the long side at just over 600 pages but I could not put this novel down! Day two (or was it day 3?) into reading my husband actually asked me "Are you going to do anything today? Maybe parent our child?" uhhh, yeaa........obviously once I've finished this book
I c a n n o t wait for Ms. Meacham`s next novel Titans. It comes out in April and I am soo looking forward to reading it!
